If you are not ready for motherhood as yet, then early detection is necessary for safe termination of pregnancy. Here are the 5 signs and symptoms of pregnancy which appear in the first month:

1. Period Missed On The Expected Date

If you were having periods at regular intervals, and now you have missed period on the expected date, then probably you are pregnant. If, in addition to this, other symptoms mentioned below are present, then definitely its time to go for a pregnancy test.

2. Feeling Of Sickness In The Morning

Most women have morning sickness in their first pregnancy. Soon after the missed period, you may have a feeling of uneasiness and nausea on waking in morning. Nausea may be mild or intense, leading to vomiting. However, this sick feeling rarely lasts beyond the 3rd month of pregnancy.

3. Tired Feeling Or Fatigue

This symptom may appear soon after the missed period (4 weeks). Slightest work makes you tired and a feeling of fatigue may persist whole day.

4. Feeling Of Discomfort In The Breasts

Breast discomfort is especially marked in the first pregnancy and appears around 6 - 8 weeks. You may have:

  • Feeling of fullness in the breasts along with a pricking sensation.
  • Breasts become enlarged and delicate veins become visible under the skin, due to engorgement of the blood vessels.
  • Nipple and areola become more pigmented or dark.
5. Increased Frequency Of Micturition

This symptom usually starts around the 8th week of pregnancy and lasts till the 12th week. You may have urging to urinate at short intervals.

Why pregnancy increases frequency of urination?

  • Pregnant uterus becomes bulky and exerts pressure on the fundus of the urinary bladder.
  • Increased congestion of the mucus membrane of the urinary bladder due to pregnancy.
  • Pregnant uterus bends forward and the cervix shifts backwards, due to this, base of the bladder becomes stretched.
  • This symptom rarely lasts beyond the first trimester of pregnancy, since, after 12 weeks the uterus straightens up with the increasing size of the baby in the womb.
